7 BEST places to visit in UNITED KINGDOM

Updated: May 23, 2023

One of Europe's most popular tourist destinations is United Kingdom which include England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. From big cities to breathtaking countryside, United Kingdom is without a doubt a travellers paradise.

Here is my list of the 7 best places to visit in United Kingdom

1. LONDON- The capital city of United Kingdom

LONDON by far is one of the most visited cities in whole of Europe. A classic modern european city which is rich in culture, history and heritage.

A travel to United Kingdom is incomplete without visiting its capital city. Perhaps for many travellers to UK, London would be the first city you step in, as it is the home to biggest airport in UK- LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT, having connections to almost every city in the world.

Not just for being the capital of UK, the city has plenty of attractions for you. Infact there are numerous sightseeing places enough to spend your whole holiday.

The world famous Tower bridge, royal residence of Buckingham palace, the historic Tower of London showcasing the Kohinoor diamond and the famous London eye offering panoramic view of the city- London surely is on the top of the list.

2. STONEHENGEWhere history sleeps

Believed to be constructed from around 3000 BC to 2000 BC, located on the Salisbury plains in Wiltshire, is this magnificent piece of history.

Standing tall to this date, each stone weighs about 25 tons and are named SARSEN STONE.

Interestingly, a number of myths surrounds the stone, such as how such huge stones were transported 5000 years back for construction and for what purpose it was built. There are many ongoing archeological researches taking place in UK to find out the answers to all the myths.

The whole monument, now ruinous, was added to UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites in 1986 and is now a protected site. But visitors who wants to see this historical monument can purchase a ticket either online or from the nearby Stonehenge visitor centre.

If you are visiting Stonehenge, its worth visiting the nearby Salisbury town and Salisbury Cathedral where you can see the tallest church spire in Britain, worlds oldest mechanical clock and best preserved 1215 Magna carta ( one of four original copies preserved to date).

3. DORSET AND JURASSIC COASTA natural wonder

On the South of England, along the English channel lies the county of Dorset- home to natural wonders.

Two natural wonders brings all the glory to the place- DURDLE DOOR and THE LULWORTH COVE.

Durdle door- A natural limestone arch on the beach, carved by the beach waves over thousands of years and surrounded by clear blue water is this spectacular place to visit. Because of its stunning beauty, it is also one of the most photographed places in whole of England.

Lulworth cove- A layered cliff formed as a result of gradual erosion from beach waves hitting the limestone cliffs is another natural wonder in Dorset.

The entire Jurassic coastline, 95 miles in stretch, is a UNESCO world heritage site recognised for outstanding rocks, fossil and landforms. Fossils and rocks dating back to Jurassic and Cretaceous periods can be found here, hence the name Jurassic coast.

4. ISLE OF WIGHT- The largest island in England

A popular holiday destination located in the south coast of England, floating on the English channel and the largest island in England is this little county of Isle of wight.

Home to famous Osborne house- Queen Victoria summer house, and the world famous THE NEEDLES- One of seven natural wonders of the world, definitely isle of Wight is a great place to visit.

A subtle oceanic climate makes the island a perfect holiday destination in UK. Filled with holiday resorts and restaurants, the island has everything you want for a great relaxing holiday.

5. SNOWDONIA- The land of mountains

Located in North Wales, boasting extraordinary scenic views, is the largest national park in Wales- SNOWDONIA national park ( aka ERYRI-welsh).

Home to the highest mountain in Wales- The SNOWDON, it is surely a hikers paradise. Climbing the mount Snowdon to reach its summit to see the epic view from top is definitely a bucket-list addition.

If you are not into hiking, you can take the Snowdonia mountain railway, considered as one the worlds most scenic railway routes, to the top of mountain. You will be invited with one of its kind mountain top summit visitor centre with a mountain café in place.

You can experience what it is like to sip a coffee from the top of the tallest mountain in Wales.

Not just for hikers alone, Snowdonia is home to many adventure sports like white water rafting, mountain biking, Zip world- Longest zip line in the Europe and many more.

If walking or jumping or climbing is not your thing, then Snowdonia has some of the best picturesque small villages where you can stay back, relax and enjoy your time seeing the beautiful scenery.

A drive through the famous Lanberis pass along the foot of mount Snowdon showcases the dramatic landscapes, lakes and tiny rivers of Snowdonia national park.

6. SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS- A heaven on Earth

Home to LOCHS ( lakes), GLENS( valleys) and BEN ( mountains), words fail to describe the dramatic natural beauty of this place.

There are plenty of places to explore in Scotland, LOCH LOMOND- known as the 'Queen of Scottish lakes', LOCH NESS- famous for the mythical monster and Urquhart castle, Ben Nevis- the highest mountain in Scotland and many more.

The world famous Scottish whisky and its distillery tour are not to be missed while you are here.

Highlands are also one the best places to go for epic roadtrips in UK. The world famous road trip route named NORTH COAST- 500, which starts and ends in the seaside town of Inverness in north of Scotland will leave you speechless with its dramatic beauty.

If you ever want to know how beautiful and majestic nature can be, then SCOTLAND should be your go to place.

7. LAKE DISTRICT- The magic of Lakes.

One of the most magical places to visit in UK comprising of 16 glacial lakes , fells (mountains) and numerous forest is the stunning Lake District National Park.

The still lakes reflecting the mountain backdrop ornamented by the green tress is simply a spectacular sight to see.

Some of the lakes are as long as 16 kilometers in length, where many activities like boating, kayaking and fishing takes place, making it a perfect holiday destination.

Lake district is also home to the world famous poet William Wordsworth. His family home named 'Dove Cottage' is still preserved to date and is open to visitors.

The famous poem ‘ the daffodils’ was written while he was in this home and he describe the scenic view from his house across the lake as the best gift for him from nature.

"I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought" - William Wordsworth
